Please Someone, Who wrote this song?

This is James Taylor's version of it but he couldn't have written it.  He would only have been three or so years old the first time I heard it.  But his version is the closes to the lyrics I remember.  Amost exactly but not quite.

Maybe you'll remember it Burgundystblues.  we were in high school and it was a big hit on the radio.  Maybe not in the top 10 or 20 songs but awfully close.  It was a male who sang it and the lyrics were a little more expanded nd cool than Taylor did them.  It could have referred to coming back from Korean war.

I tried to track down the writer but was told that Irving Berlin wrote it in 1924.  That is not the same song.

Somebody help.  I want to hear it in its original version.

I didn’t know i had already written about this almost two years ago. Got much help from Bechtol and from SEC. but not the singer I remember. Well. what can I say. It was then and still is driving me nuts.

It’s a traditional folk song, so who wrote it is anyone’s guess. James Taylor did add lyrics to his version.
